Mission Statement

Aston Athletics

Aston Athletics Basketball Club was founded in 2007 and is the parent company to Team Birmingham Elite Basketball Club. The club was created to engage with the youth via sport.  We use sport as a tool to engage with the young to promote social change.

Aston Athletics is a community club led by members from the Birmingham community whose main focus is to interact, develop and nurture the young to be productive members of society.  Everything we do is geared toward improving and helping our community.

Basketball is our chosen sport, a sport we are passionate about, but actually, basketball chose us. As the second-largest participant sport in this country, basketball incorporates people from all walks of life.

Basketball appeals to disadvantaged children as they gravitate to it at schools and parks, it is also a sport the B.A.M.E community dominates in terms of numbers and achievement.

The social capital gained by being in a team/community environment branches off into many facets, thus giving the young a kickstart in life via experiences they share.

Aston Athletics is at the forefront to help the young progress through the adolescent time of their life and create pathways for their future success.

We try to achieve our outcomes by being involved in national league competition for all age groups.  As an ambitious club, we want to play and win at the highest levels nationally, to produce winners and mould a mentality that always thinks about achieving goals.

Our club is involved in government projects which are geared to the development of the young such as the national lottery or Birmingham City Council. Also, our members can develop their skills via training programmes in table officials, refereeing and coaching to help prepare them for life after playing but still being involved in the sport.

We believe hard work, respect and commitment are vital for future success.  By applying a no-excuses policy, our members learn about accountability and leave us better prepared to achieve success in their individual lives.

Aston Athletics is here for the community and ran by people from the community.

We are here to help.

BMet (James Watt/Sutton Coldfield College) Basketball Academy falls under the Team Birmingham Elite Development Pathway. BMet is the largest college in the 2nd city which hosts some of the top young British Talent from all over the country and currently has players from European countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Malta, Ireland, Italy and Spain.

All students continue their academic and athletic careers by studying a full-time course whilst undergoing a demanding basketball schedule. Our students can select a course to study from James Watt or Sutton Coldfield College campuses.

The programme also falls into the England Development Pathway (EDP) where selected students will complete a Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DISE) and is geared towards athletes who have realistic potential to achieve excellence and are seeking to perform at the highest level as their main career goal.

BMet (James Watt/Sutton Coldfield) will face other EDP institutes around the UK and compete in the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) and the Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL). After many seasons in the EABL reaching playoffs and players from the programme making the national teams, we have been granted to be back in the WEABL for the 2020/21 season.

Alongside Academy games, there are many playing outlets in the NBL for the young athletes, including NBL D2 Men, NBL D2 Women, NBL U18 Boys and U18 NBL Women.

WEABL: Women Elite Academy Basketball League

Team Birmingham Elite Basketball Club have partnered with Birmingham Metropolitan College: James Watt College (BMet) to operate the Basketball at performance level for 16-19-year-old female players who study full-time courses alongside their Basketball schedule under the England Development Pathway (EDP).

Women’s Basketball has always been a key priority for TBE to increase participation and improve level of performance. We are proud to say the club has provided NBL at U16s Girls and U18s Women over the years. At AoC Sport, our academy started in the women’s league and won the AoC National College Championships in 2016.

Players such as Ebony Horton (Great Britain U20 & Leicester Riders/Manchester Mystics, WBBL) and Kyra Smith (Myerscough, USA, HoopsFix All Star Classic) have come through the programme during their journeys. After hard work and dedication of the organisation, the club now provides performance level Basketball for the 2020/21 season and has attracted players from around the UK and Europe .

BMet: James Watt College is one of the four campuses of Birmingham Metropolitan College. However, our students who attend the programme have the flexibility to attend any campuses that is ideal for them.

Majority of our students who attend the programme are present at James Watt College or Sutton Coldfield College which ranges from Level 1-3 in vocational studies and our A Level Centre is based at Sutton Coldfield College.
